Alexandre Choffé, former Naval assistant doctor, graduated from medical school in Montpellier in 1873. He would invent many medicated recipes, but the most famous would be Désiline and Vin Désiles. A framed anchor with Choffé’s initials (A.C.), its logo, was stuck onto the containers of these “medicines”. Vin Désiles, advertised as “medicine”, was a tonic, alcohol-based mixture resembling quinquina wine. It was nonetheless sold in pharmacies, with instructions to take it before each meal in order to maximise its heating, tonic effect on the muscle fibres!
Here are the ingrediants: special 15° wine liqueur, kola nuts, coca leaves, quiquina succirubra, théobrama-cacao, iodine (Codex colouring), sodium phosphate, 30° purified glycerine, orange alcohol and lithium carbonate.
