Grille of a wine shop, rue de l'Arbalète - 1900
This vendor, whose wines and liqueurs are sold alongside wood and coal, is very likely a bougnat - a Parisian of the Auvergne. The family name Oudoul comes from this region. From the start of the 19th century, many bougnats gradually moved into house-to-house deliveries of wood and coal, as well as drinks like wines and spirits. They were still the largest immigrant community in Paris in the first 30 years of the 20th century. This photo was taken in 1914, just before the outbreak of the Great War.
