At the start of the 20th century, Au Lapin Agile is the hub of Montmartre’s artistic bohemians, “a true cultural institution” frequented by Maz Jacob, Apollinaire, Blaise Cendrars, Picasso (who painted his Au Lapin agile there in 1905 – the painting, now displayed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, depicts a harlequin holding a glass) and many others. After the First World War, the Lapin Agile was unable to resume its old role of meeting-place for avant-garde writers and artists. Montparnasse was the new gravitational centre for creativity; after the Second World War, Saint-Germain-des-Prés would take the crown.
